Over two years I was a primary subject matter expert on the SYNC hands-free voice-control system for Ford, and primary UX designer for the initial 2010 MyFord and MyLincoln Touch owner support site–with cross-linking and social media strategy. I also solved integration issues within the Ford web ecosystem with the Ford Owner, Vehicle and Corporate sites (including working on FMC Dealer intranet UX research project, Ford SYNCmyride.com, Ford Auto Shows);

Also worked 1.5 years for Razorfish on-site at Condé Nast for the following sites: Style.com redesign (when Vogue was still integrated into the site), Portfolio.com , Flip.com, and  Men.Style.com (when GQ was still integrated into the site).

Responsibilities: Wireframes (redesign already in progress when I joined the team); Site Map; Flows; Design and Structure of Wiki intranet document space; Integration of Wiki docs with RallyDev Agile Specs and Feature/Bug Tracking system; Functional Specs; Management of QA process and functional QA through launch.

Responsibilities: (Proposed UX/Creative redesign already complete when I joined the team); URL Remapping Master Document; Functional Specs for entire site (except premium content), including rules and interactions for all page/sport/community/personalization templates and modules. Sole author of about 200 pages of documentation for the proposed redesign, written in two months, April-May 2008.

Responsibilities: Wireframes (Article Template redesign, Comments Interface and Comment Page redesign, Module system WFs, Teamsite CMS redesign for Home Page Template and Article Template); Home Page and Article/Module Template Specs.

Responsiblities: Lead Functional Analyst on Flip team for 1.5 years; Specs through Iterative and Two Major Redesigns; Content Migration Plan; Registration and other Process Flows; Contributed to two separate UX and Interaction Design Audits with Sr. IA; Migration of RIA tools to Facebook Application; Teamsite CMS Wireframes; late RIA Wireframes; Design, Navigation, and Structure for fully-integrated intranet wiki archive of all documentation, design, and content and PM resources (my wiki central doc design and navigational structure was adopted as a model across other CondeNet properties as well).

Not too long ago, someone asked me to predict where interactive media and the Internet would be five years from now. I refused to give an answer, because I don’t get to decide. The beauty of a grassroots, bottom-up social movement like in the Blogosphere is that the social structures provide an organic kind of direction and structure, and the social structure is the authority, not “industry leaders” or “futurists” or any other professional prognosticators striving for control or a first-mover advantage.

Interactivity is about giving up control.

What I strive to do as a designer and a participant in this grassroots social movement is to create tools that empower the most people with enough freedom to set their own directions. I’m not interested in herding cats. I am interested in watching and learning inductively from where cats go.
